32회를 맞이하면서 부산국제단편영화제는 우선 공식경쟁부문을 국제경쟁과 한국경쟁으로 세분하였습니다. 4,500편 이상의 작품들이 경쟁부문에 출품되고 있는 현 시점에서, 부산국제단편영화제는 충분한 가능성을 내재하고 있음에도 매번 치열한 경쟁률로 인해 상영 기회를 얻지 못하는 국내작품들을 지켜보면서 안타까움을 느꼈습니다. 이제 부산국제단편영화제는 보다 다양한 한국작품들이 선보여질 수 있는 기회를 제공하고 또한 각각의 작품들이 세계로 진출할 수 있도록 다방면으로 노력할 것입니다.
그리고 아시아 프로그램에 많은 애정을 기울였습니다. 한국이 속해있는 아시아 지역 역시 다른 대륙들과 마찬가지로 나름의 고유한 문제와 고민을 겪고 있으며, 또한 영화라는 매체를 통해 그것들을 표현해내고 있습니다. 하지만 현재 아시아 작품들이 소통될 수 있는 기회를 얻기는 그리 쉽지 않은 듯 합니다. 그런 이유로 부산국제단편영화제는 올해 아시아 단편영화의 경향을 살펴볼 수 있는 프로그램을 새롭게 정비하였고, 또한 아시아영화진흥기구에 가입, 넷팩상을 신설하여 아시아 단편영화의 현재와 미래에 대해 지속적으로 관심을 갖고자 합니다.
또한 올 해 ‘주빈국 스웨덴’ 프로그램은 그 어느 해보다도 풍요롭고 다채롭다고 할 수 있습니다. 국내에서는 처음으로 잉마르 베리만의 단편들을 만나 볼 수 있는 ‘스웨덴 클래식’, 그리고 웁살라단편영화제가 공을 들여 준비한 ‘스웨덴 코미디’ 섹션 등의 상영 프로그램뿐만 아니라 스웨덴 얼터너티브 포스트 락 그룹 ‘헌트’가 영화와 함께 펼치는 ‘스웨덴 시네마 콘서트’ 프로그램은 스웨덴의 문화와 예술을 한껏 느껴볼 수 있는 기회를 제공할 것입니다
이외에도 내년 주빈국인 오스트리아의 혁신적인 단편들을 만나볼 수 있는 ‘프리퀄 오브 오스트리아’ “영화와 현실 그리고 다큐멘터리”라는 주제로 다큐멘터리의 최근 흐름을 집중적으로 다루고 있는 ‘클로즈업’, 동시대 세계 단편영화의 경향과 흐름을 살펴보기 위해 마련된 ‘커튼콜’, 그리고 온 가족이 편안하게 웃고 즐길 수 있도록 준비된 ‘패밀리 단편’ 섹션 등은 관객들에게 단편영화만의 매력과 재미를 제공할 수 있을 것입니다.

Now in its 32nd anniversary, Busan International Short Film Festival has divided the official competition section into two: International Competition and Korean Competition. At this point, when over 4,500 films are being submitted, we regret that the fierce selection makes it impossible for many of the local films with plenty of potential to be screened. Hence it is the goal of Busan International Short Film Festival to allow an opportunity for more Korean films to be showcased and enter the international film arena.
Much care has been put in the Landscape of Asian Shorts. Asia, the continent of Korea, has, like any other continent, its own set of problems and worries which are then expressed through the media of film. However it is still not easy for Asian films to have a channel for interacting with the public. Therefore Busan International Short Film Festival has organized a new program that allows for a look into this year’s Asian short films and their prospects. We have also enrolled in the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema (NETPAC) and established the Netpac Award in order to provide continued interest in Asian short films now and in the future.
This year’s Guest Country Sweden program is richer and more diverse than ever before. We will have a chance to watch Ingmar Bergman’s shorts for the first time in Korea in the “Swedish Classic,” and enjoy the “Swedish Humor” section, which was prepared through the efforts of Uppsala Short Film Festival. The “Swedish Cinema Concert”, which will showcase Swedish alternative post-rock band HUNT, will provide a chance for enjoying Swedish culture and art to the full.
There is still much more to be enjoyed through the charm only short films can provide: “Prequel of Austria” gives us a chance to meet some innovative shorts from next year’s guest country, “Close Up” focuses on current trends of documentaries with the theme “Cinema, Reality and Documentary,” “Curtain Call” allows a closer look into today’s trends and prospects of shorts, and “Shorts for Family” is especially prepared for family enjoyment.
