장 보는 남매 / Maybe Just For You

노르웨이 외곽 지대에서 어머니와 사는 어린 남매가 마트에 들어가 장을 본다. 하지만 돈이 부족해 원하는 것을 살 수 없어 고민한다. 오빠(11살)가 물건을 훔치려고 하지만 주변의 눈치도 보인다. 신고를 접수한 마트의 직원이 다가와 오빠의 몸을 수색한다. 이 장면을 향한 도덕적 비난보다 더 중요한 것은 절박한 현실이다. 아이들을 손쉽게 타락시키는 현실은 무겁게 영화를 채운다.

A young girl and her brother who live with their mother in a suburb in Norway go grocery shopping. But they don’t have enough money to buy what they want. The eleven-year-old boy tries to steal something but is afraid somebody sees him. Due to his suspicious move, the staff comes to frisk him. What is more important than morally criticizing this situation is the dire and desperate reality that they face. The reality that easily corrupt children heavily fills this movie.

중력 버티기 Standing Ground

이수는 선배 언니들의 폭력에 시달린다. 주희를 데려오라는 말에 동급생들과 함께 오락실로 찾아간 이수는 주희를 만나 학교 뒤 아지트로 데려가지만 끝내 도망치는 주희를 붙잡지 못한다. 학교 폭력은 서로를 겨눈 채 사라지지 않고, 철봉 앞에서 두 사람은 “철봉귀신”에 관한 이야기를 나눈다. 그것은 학교에서 사라지지 않는 무겁게 짓눌린 괴담의 현실이다.

Isu is bullied by older girls at school. As Isu is asked to bring Juhee, she goes to a video arcade together with her classmates and brings her to the hidden place behind the school. But Juhee runs away and Isu cannot catch her.

School violence aims each other and lingers for a long time. They talk about the story of “pull-up bar ghost” on the playground. It is the reality of heavily oppressed situation of school that never leaves and wanders around like the ghost story.

집 위의 난파선 Dream of Wreck

다의는 집에 더 이상 자신이 있을 곳이 없다는 생각이 든다. 다의는 자신이 그렸던 낙서 고래가 변기를 통해 탈출하는 것을 발견하고, 고래를 따라 여정을 나선다. 고래를 따르는 길은 새로운 집을 벗어나는 일이자 새로운 집을 찾는 과정이다. 진짜 나의 집은 어디에 있을까. 소녀의 몽상과 마음의 풍경들이 간결한 터치로 펼쳐진다.

Da-ui feels that there is no place for her at her own home. One day, she happens to see the whale that she painted for fun escaping through the toilet, and decides to follow its journey. Joining the journey is a way to free herself and find a new home. Where is my, real home? The girl’s daydream and her mindscape unroll with simple touches.

챔피언 / Champion

1997년의 캘리포니아. 허름한 모텔에서 엄마와 아이들이 지낸다. 엄마는 아빠가 돈을 벌어 미국에 들어오면 좋은 집에서 살게 될거라고 말하지만 아이의 입장에서 기다림의 시간은 길고 지루하기만 하다. 이민자들을 다루고 있는 짧은 단편이지만 보다 아이의 시선에서 기다림과 기약없의 순간들을 붙잡아 둔다. 가족을 둘러싼 희망의 공기는 너무나 희미하다.

California in 1997. A mom and her children stay in a run-down motel. Mom always tells her kids that they will live in a nice house when their father makes money and comes to the U.S. However, for the kids, waiting is too long and boring. This short film talks about immigrants. Meanwhile, it captures the endless moments of waiting from the children’s perspective. The expectation of hopes surrounding the family is too vague and thin.

퍼펙트라이트 / Perfect Light

우주동호회의 친구 애플과 파인은 우주선을 만든다. 애플은 완성된 우주선을 타고 떠날 계획이지만 파인은 떠날 마음이 없다. 그러던 어느 날 파인에게 손님이 찾아오고, 애플의 제안에 따라 우주로 나아가기로 결심한다. 우주, 우정, 우연, 운명 사이에서 벌어지는 더 긴 이야기가 가능할 것 같은 프리퀄의 느낌이지만 일본 장편 애니의 면모를 떠올리게 하는 높은 완성도와 가능성에 주목한다.

Apple and Pine are friends in the space club and make a spaceship together. Apple plans to take the spaceship and leave the earth, but Pine doesn’t want to. One day, Pine has a visitor and decides to go to the space according to Apple’s suggestion. The story seems somewhat like a prequel that is followed by longer stories about space, friendship, coincidence and fate, but the well-made narrative and potentials that remind us of Japanese feature animations are quite noticeable.

폴의 여름 / SUMMER 96

마틸드 베두에 Mathilde Bedouet / 2023 / 프랑스 France / 12’ / 12세이용가 / DCP

폴의 가족이 캘롯 섬에 휴가를 가는데 조수의 차이를 파악하지 못한 탓에 섬에 갇히면서 작은 소동과 갈등이 일어난다. 그 가운데 폴은 어른들과 아이들의 경계에 서 있는 자신을 발견합니다. 여름날의 인상과 움직임만으로도 감정과 숨결이 느껴지는 한 여름의 한때를 붙들어 놓는 작품이다.

Paul’s family go on a vacation to Calot Island. However, as they failed to thoroughly calculate the tide, they were stranded on the island, which led to conflicts and problems. Amid this mess, Paul finds himself that he is standing at the crossroads of child and adult. That is also another aspect of growth. This film captures the brief moments in the middle of summer when emotions and breath can be felt even through the impression of summer days and small moves.

가족이 해변으로 놀러왔다. 미나는 주차장에 있는 가족 차를 운전하고 싶지만, 오빠는 고집스럽게 차에서 나오지를 않는다. 그때, 하늘에서 무엇인가 떨어진다. 미나는 아빠와 함께 사력을 다해 싸우기 시작한다. 그것은 누구의 마음일까? 공상 과학 우주 판타지 괴수 만화를 가져온 것에 불과할까? 소녀의 몽상과 현실 사이에서 한낮의 이벤트가 펼쳐진다.

Mina’s family goes to the beach. She wants to drive the family car, but her brother refuses to leave the car. At the very moment, something is falling from the sky. Mina starts to fight desperately together with her father. Is it someone’s mind? No. Then, is it just something borrowed from a sci-fi-space-fantasy-monster-comic-book? A daylight event occurring in somewhere between a girl’s daydream and her reality is coming to you.
