보트피플 / Boat People

베트남에서 탈출한 난민인 ‘보트 피플’의 이야기는 꽤 친숙하다. 이 작품은 타오의 어머니가 설탕물 그릇에 담긴 개미를 구하는 이야기와 겹쳐서 들려준다. 베트남 남중국해에서 죽어간 수천 명의 사람들과 살아남은 자들의 이야기를 전통적인 2D 애니메이션과 스톱 모션의 활용과 3D 랜더링 기법을 활용하여 역사의 순간과 우화의 양식을 흥미롭게 조화시켜 들려준다.

The story of the “boat people” who escaped from Vietnam may be quite familiar to us. This movie parallels the story Tao’s mother tells that she saved ants from drowning in the sugar water bowl. It shows the people who died or survived on the South China Sea, with 2D animation techniques, stop-motion technique and 3D rendering. It keeps balance between the historic moments and fables in an interesting and harmonious way.

10세 소녀 릴리는 수영 팬티 한장만 입고 또래 소년들과 수영을 해왔다. 그런데 가족과 함께 워터파크로 여행을 가면서 비키니를 입으라는 권유를 받는다. 주변의 남자아이들은 모두 가슴을 드러내고 물에 뛰어드는데 자신은 왜 불편한 수영복을 입어야 할까. 당연한 듯 보이지만 당연하지 않은 릴리의 고민과 반항이 워터파크를 가득 채운다.

A 10-year-old-girl, Lili, has always swum topless with boys of her age. One day, she goes to the water park with her family and is forced to wear a bikini top. Why should she wear an uncomfortable swimming suit while boys do not have to hide their breast? Lili’s unanswered questions that seem obvious but not, and disobedient minds fill the pool.

선악의 저편 / Beyond Good and Evil

소문이 퍼진다. 고등학생 다은이 수민을 괴롭혀서 전학을 가게 되었다는 것이다. 소문의 벽은 다은을 고립시키고, 단짝마저 다은을 의심한다. 다은은 직접 수민을 만나러 간다. 다은은 억울함을 호소하지만 수민으로부터 돌아오는 말은 “정말 잘못이 없다고 생각해.”이다. 이 영화의 진정한 폭력은 무력이 아니라 말이다. 말은 그 누구도 자유로울 수 없는 폭력의 순환 고리다.

Rumor is spreading that a high schooler, Daeun, bullied Sumin to make her transfer to another school. The rumor isolates Daeun and even her best friend starts to suspect her. Daeun comes to meet Sumin by herself. Daeun claims that she is not guilty, but what she gets from Sumin is “Do you really think that you are not guilty?” True violence in this movie is not physical but verbal. Mean words start the vicious cycle of violence that anyone cannot be free from.

성장 클리닉 / Growth Clinic

엄마 은하는 키가 작은 딸을 위해 한약과 주사 처방을 결정한다. 그것은 어린 지우에게 가해지는 억압이자 규율이 된다. 반전은 엉뚱하게 일어난다. 지우 또한 엄마가 자라길 바라는 마음에 나름의 처방을 시행한다. 놀란 엄마는 뒤바뀐 입장을 통해 성장한다. 진정한 처방이 무엇인지를 거울처럼 보여주는 영화.

Eunha, decides to prescribe Korean traditional medicine and injection for her daughter Jiwoo, because she is short. However, The decision becomes oppression and discipline towards Jiwoo. But, the twist happens in an unexpected way. Jiwoo also wants her mother to grow so she prescribes for her mom. Mother is startled at first but grows by experiencing being in others’ shoes. This movie shows like a mirror what a true prescription is.

A girl becomes a caretaker for her three siblings After her mom left. However, like her mom, the siblings turn into animals one by one. For them, forest is much more attractive than the family. Now, the girl prepares for a journey to a city, not to a forest. Can she live in an unfamiliar city? It is a masterpiece among the short films last year, which beautifully shows an adventure of coming of an age and magical power of changing reality on a screen.
