  Introduction of the exhibition : Budapest - A Visual Diary

   

  본 전시는 수채화를 통해 부다페스트를 산책하는 전시이다. 감정, 도덕, 사상, 때로는 불합리를 표현하며 그림의 서사는 도시의 배경에 멈춰져 있다. 고정되어 있는 시간과 장소에 있는 일상적인 모습의 사람들의 그림일기와 같다.

  The exhibition is a pictorial walk through Budapest. Narratives are frozen in the backdrop of the city, depicting an allegory of emotion, morals, ideas and sometimes absurdity. The paintings are like a visual diary fixed in time and place – people on the stage of everyday life.

   

  마커스 골드선 개인전을 통하여 상대적으로 노출이 덜했던 헝가리 현대회화를 한국에 소개하는 것을 목적으로 하며 전시의 주제는 외국인의 눈에 비춰진 부다페스트 시민들의 도시 생활이다. 30점의 수채화는 부다페스트거리의 생동감 넘치는 불합리함을 표현한다. 그는 주로 수채화를 통해 작품을 하지만 때로는 오일과 물감을 섞어 사용하기도 한다. 수채화물감으로 스케치나 좀 더 규모가 큰 작품의 마무리를 한다. 작가는 수채화 물감이 다양성을 표현할 수 있는 효과적인 매개이며 빠른 스케치 작업, 색감의 층을 더해 규모가 큰 작품의 색과 톤을 조정하는 데 효과적이라고 한다.

  The purpose of Marcus Goldson’s exhibition is to introduce the contemporary Hungarian paintings to Korea, which has been relatively less exposed and shared in Korea. The theme of the exhibition is urban daily lives of citizens in Budapest shown through the eyes of a foreigner. His 30 watercolor paintings will express the vibrant absurdity of Budapest’s streets. Watercolor is his medium of choice, although occasionally he also produces work in oil, print and mixed media. He uses watercolor for sketching and for his larger, finished pieces. According to the artist, watercolor is a very versatile medium, it’s great for light, quick sketches and for building up layers of color and tone on his larger works.

  Introduction of the artist : Marcus Goldson

   

  작가는 특정 스타일이나 양식, 주제로 국한하지는 않지만 일상생활의 관찰에 작가의 색을 더한 작품 작업을 주로 한다. 마커스는 명백한 아이러니와 유머가 만들어지며 서사가 방해되고 있는 순간을 묘사하는 것을 즐긴다. 그는 또한 세부적인 부분에 집중한다. 사람들의 의상, 거리의 간판, 담배의 상표, 수염의 스타일, 카페의 에티켓과 같은 특정 장소의 명확한 세부적인 모습들을 담는다면 전체 상황을 이해할 수 있게 되며 이러한 디테일들이 정확한 장소와 시간을 말해주기도 한다. 부다페스트와 같은 도시에서는 동일한 거리에서 단순 명쾌한 재미, 이상하고 섬뜩한 것들을 같은 시간대에 경험할 수 있다.

  The artist hasn’t restricted himself to any particular style or subject matter but most of his pictures are derived from observations of real life with a little embellishment by the artist himself. Marcus likes depicting scenes where the narrative has been interrupted, creating apparent irony or humor. He also pays a lot of attention to details. If you put in details that are specific to the place, like people’s clothing, street signs, brands of cigarette, moustache styles, cafe etiquette, then you will get a more complete picture and it shows a specific place at a specific time. In a city like Budapest, you can witness anything from the plain hilarious to the weird and macabre in a matter of minutes on the same street.

   

  마커스는 1993년 헝가리 부다페스트로 이주하여 헝가리의 독특하고 다른 모습을 묘사하는 외국 작가로 활동하기 시작했다. 그는 사람들의 습관, 패션, 전혀 패셔너블하지 않은 모습, 수영장 문화, 바 문화, 일상의 모든 면면들을 살피며 부다페스트 사람들이 그들의 일상을 영위하는 모습을 그림일기로 전하고자 한다.

  Marcus moved to Budapest in 1993 and as a foreign artist in a foreign country he became interested in depicting the things he found different and unusual about Hungary. He looked at people’s habits, fashion, un-fashion, pool culture, bar culture and all aspects of daily life to create a rich visual diary of Hungarians at work and play in their own setting.
