  2023 야마가타국제다큐멘터리영화제는 팬데믹 이후 4년 만에 정상개최 되었다. 2021년 온라인 개최 당시, 영화제의 상징적 야간행사 '코미안 클럽'이 열리던 오랜 전통의 피클 가게가 폐업하고, 영화제의 중추적 인물이 갑자기 사망했다. 마지막 정상 개최 이후 지난 4년은 많은 도전의 시기였다. 우리는 인터뷰를 통해 영화제의 의의와 매력, 관계자들의 생각과 결심을 살핀다.

  
  

  
  

  
  

  The Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival 2023 was held normally for the first time in four years after the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, when the film festival was held online, a long-established pickle store that had been the venue for the festival’s symbolic night time social venue, “Komian Club”, went out of business, and the man who had been the backbone of the film festival passed away suddenly… The four years since the last regular festival was held have been a time of many challenges for the film festival. Through interviews, we will look into the significance and appeal of the festival, as well as the thoughts and the determination of the people involved.

  2023년 야마가타국제다큐멘터리영화제(YIDFF)의 35주년을 기념하는 다큐멘터리다. 팬데믹 이후 4년 만에 오프라인 행사로 진행된 영화제의 풍경을 기록했다. 영화제가 시작된 배경과 영화제의 주요 기치도 군데군데 섞이며 풍성한 기록 영상으로 완성됐다. YIDFF가 스스로 소개한 영화제의 강점은 친밀함이다. 도쿄국제영화제와 같은 커다란 영화제보다 창작자와 관객 사이의 거리가 무척 가깝고, 그렇기에 모두가 더 따스하고 깊은 기억을 만들 수 있단 것이다. 애초 영화제를 시작했던 사람들의 부단한 노력은 마을의 젊은이들에게 이어졌고 영화제는 지역 축제로서의 중요한 가치까지 지켜내고 있다. 아이부터 노년까지, 온 마을 주민이 자원봉사자로 두런두런 모여 영화제와 영화의 재미를 설파하는 일련의 장면은 일상적인 광경이면서도 무척이나 뭉클하다.  (이우빈)

  우치야는 열 살배기쯤 되어 보이는 아들 빅터와 둘이 살고 있다. 빅터는 다리를 크게 다친 것인지 보행 보조기를 사용하여 재활 운동에 매진 중이다. 어느 날 빅터는 담요와 베개를 사용해 거실에 텐트 하나를 짓는다. 그 후로부터 빅터는 방에서 혼잣말을 뇌까리고 이상한 그림을 그리기도 한다. 심지어 빅터는 집에 없는 아버지를 자꾸만 찾기에 이른다. 아들의 기괴한 행동에 불안감을 느낀 지 얼마 안 될 무렵 우치아는 집안에 스며든 공포의 진상과 마주한다. 전반적으로 호러 스릴러의 작법을 택한 영화이지만, 내용의 근간은 상실의 트라우마에 시달리는 한 모녀의 심리적 파고다. 새하얀 눈으로 뒤덮인 산속의 이미지, 빼곡한 숲 한가운데 있는 외딴집의 풍경이 인물들의 고립감과 초조함을 적절히 빗대어 표현한다.  (이우빈)

  
  

  
  

  
  

  Łucja lives alone with her son Victor, who is around ten and undergoing rehabilitation with a walking aid due to a severe leg injury. One day, Victor builds a tent in the living room from blankets and pillows, and begins talking to himself, drawing strange pictures, and searching for his absent father. As Łucja becomes concerned about his odd behavior, she uncovers the horror that has invaded their home. While the film follows horror thriller conventions, it primarily explores the psychological trauma of a mother and son dealing with loss.   도시의 오래된 주택가 한켠에서 어머니와 함께 아이스크림을 파는 남자가 있다. 틈날 때면 오토바이를 몰고 배달 아르바이트로 거리를 돌아다니는 남자의 일과는 단조롭다. 당장 하루를 벌어먹고 사는 일 외에 중요한 것은 없다는 듯이 무념한 태도는 스스로에게 건 약속처럼 보이기도 한다. 그런 남자가 유일하게 이야기를 편히 나누는 상대가 있다. 일하며 만나는 불특정한 사람들과 주고받는 용건에 그치는 대화가 아니라 자신의 바람과 소망을 들려줄 수 있는 대화를 가능하게 하는 사람. 그러나 그마저 곧 이 동네를, 그리고 남자를 떠날 예정이다. 다가오는 작별의 순간 앞에 남자의 마음은 점점 내달린다.  낮과 밤을 가리지 않고 거리를 울리는 오토바이 소리는 어쩔 줄 모르는 공허함을 잊으려는 듯 하염없다.   In an old city district, a man sells ice cream with his mother and takes on delivery jobs with his motorcycle during his free time. His routine is monotonous, marked by a seemingly indifferent attitude, as if he is focused solely on earning a living. The one person he can confide in about his hopes and dreams is about to leave the neighborhood. As farewell approaches, his emotions become turbulent, and the sound of his motorcycle, echoing day and night, feels like a desperate attempt to drown out the growing emptiness.   인간이 사는 곳엔 언제나 양이 있었다. 이 다큐멘터리는 양모에 얽힌 현대 사회의 난점을 가벼운 듯 묵직하게 건드린다. 영화는 무공해에 기반한 양모 의류의 전체적 작업 공정을 보여준다. 양을 키우고 양모를 채집하는 이들, 채집한 양모를 정제하는 이들, 정제된 양모로 직물을 만들고 손수 옷을 만드는 사람들이 등장한다. 그리고 이들은 입을 모아 합성 섬유가 세계 의류 시장을 지배하고 양모의 사용은 거의 사라졌음을 지적한다. 그리고 미세 플라스틱을 배출하는 합성 섬유의 위험성, 인공 직물의 공정에서 나오는 공해 문제를 짚기도 한다. 목가적인 양 목장의 풍경과 푸르른 자연의 이미지로 평화롭게 시작한 영화는 그렇게 지구 전반의 환경 위기를 거론하며 아주 넓은 시야로 확장된다.   Wherever humans have lived, sheep have always been present. This documentary lightly yet profoundly touches on the complexities surrounding wool in modern society. It showcases the entire process of creating eco-friendly wool garments, starting from raising sheep and shearing their wool, to refining the wool, and finally, weaving it into fabric and handcrafting clothes. The film features those who rear and shear the sheep, those who refine the wool, and those who weave the fabric and create garments by hand. They collectively point out that synthetic fibers dominate the global clothing market, leading to the near disappearance of wool usage. The documentary also highlights the dangers of synthetic fibers, which release microplastics, and the pollution problems associated with the production of artificial textiles.
