영화는 버려진 아이들을 위한 주거 보호 시설 근처에서 혼자 사는 42세 여성 공장 노동자 카타의 이야기를 다룹니다. 카타는 유부남과 내연 관계에 있으며, 아이를 갖고 싶어 하지만 마흔을 넘긴 나이와 자신을 구속할까 두려워하는 연인 때문에 마음이 조급해집니다. 어느 날, 카타의 집에 부모에게 버림받고 거리를 전전하던 10대 소녀 안나가 찾아와 남자친구를 만나게 해달라고 부탁합니다. 이유는 알 수 없지만, 안나에게 마음이 끌린 카타는 그녀가 보육원을 떠나 남자친구와 결혼할 수 있도록 돕기로 결심합니다.

1960년대 동유럽 뉴웨이브를 이끈 마르타 메사로시의 대표작으로, 여성 영화의 고전이라 일컫는 이 작품에서 메사로시는 <입양>으로 제25회 베를린 국제영화제에서 헝가리 감독이자 여성 감독으로는 최초로 황금곰상을 수상하며 거장 감독으로 자리매김했습니다. 메사로시 감독의 <아홉 달>처럼 <입양>은 공장 내부에서 촬영한 세미 다큐멘터리 시퀀스로 시작됩니다.

The film tells the story of Kata, a 42-year-old factory worker who lives alone near a residential care facility for abandoned children. Kata is in an affair with a married man and desires to have a child, but her age and her partner's fear of commitment make her anxious. One day, a teenage girl named Anna, who has been abandoned by her parents and has been wandering the streets, comes to Kata’s home and asks for help in meeting her boyfriend. For reasons unknown, Kata feels drawn to Anna and decides to help her leave the care facility to marry her boyfriend.

This film is a representative work of director Márta Mészáros, who led the Eastern European New Wave in the 1960s and is considered a classic of women’s cinema. Mészáros gained recognition as a master director after winning the Golden Bear at the 25th Berlin International Film Festival for this film, making her the first Hungarian and female director to achieve this honor. Like Mészáros's "Nine Months," "Adoption" begins with a semi-documentary sequence filmed inside a factory.
