농업 공학을 전공하는 율리는 오즈드에 있는 벽돌 공장에서 노동자로 일하기 시작합니다. 관리자인 야노시 보드나르는 율리에게 첫눈에 반하고, 바로 다음 날 청혼합니다. 율리는 거절하지만, 야노시는 끈질기게 구애하며 그와 관계를 맺게 됩니다. 그러나 율리는 자신이 이미 혼외 자식을 낳았다는 사실을 그에게 말하지 않습니다. 보드나르는 진실을 알게 되고, 율리의 아이를 기꺼이 받아들이는 듯 보이지만, 친척들에게는 그 존재를 숨깁니다. 그러던 중 야노시의 아이를 임신한 율리는 야노시의 반대에도 불구하고 가족에게 모든 사실을 털어놓습니다. 이를 용서할 수 없었던 보드나르는 율리와 헤어지게 됩니다. 헝가리 북부의 산업 풍경과 배우와 캐릭터의 경계가 급격하게 무너지는 놀라운 마지막 장면에서 다큐멘터리 감독으로서의 메사로시의 면모를 엿볼 수 있습니다.

Juli, a student of agricultural engineering, starts working as a labourer in a brick factory in Ózd. János Bodnár, the foreman, immediately sets his eyes on her and proposes marriage the very next day. She says no, but later she does get together with the persistently courting man. She does not tell him that she has already had a child out of wedlock. Bodnár discovers the truth and seems willing to accept the boy, but hides his existence from his own relatives. Juli, who by this time is expecting their child, tells the family everything, despite the man's prohibition. Unable to forgive her, Bodnar breaks up with her. Meszaros's skills as a documentary filmmaker are on full display in the film's stunning final sequence, in which the industrial landscape of northern Hungary and the boundaries between actor and character are sharply blurred.
